Greetings

I have started this blog in order to share my life experiences as well as document my current journey towards a better life.

Recently I submitted a letter to The Daily Advertiser, a newspaper here in Lafayette, LA. Below you will find the letter in it's entirety. I had to shorten it for the paper, since they only accept 200 words or less.

Basically, I am in the process of securing any resources I can--financial or otherwise--in order to receive a very thorough educational evaluation by a local consultant. Seeing as how I only progressed to the 6th grade in school, was what they call a "special Ed" student, and currently function with very little education and understanding of even just the basics of how this society operates, I believe that having this assessment done will be a great first step to getting me where I need to be.

The full letter reads as follows:

To All Concerned individuals of Lafayette and the Surrounding Areas:

I come to you as a native and life-long resident of Lafayette seeking your understanding and assistance.

Given the circumstances of my childhood and experiences that grew out of those circumstances, my current status in this society is essentially one of an outcast. Unlike many of you who are educated, gainfully employed, or otherwise possess keys that open to doors of opportunities in this society, I have little to no access to the very basic necessities that afford one with opportunities for advancement or proression. Due to a harsh upbringing and a life spent in and out of incarceration, I fnd myself in a position where I am not only lack a standard education, but I also struggle to find employment because of a felonious record. Please understand that I take full responsibility for any actions that placed me in unfavorable situations in during my former lifestyle. My intention is not to make excuses or to receive sympathy from others. I simply aim to improve the quality of my life as well as the lives of my children, who will benefit from their father's upliftment.

Currently my goal and focus is on self-rehabilitation. Towards this aim I am seeking the assistance of a local educational consultant so that I can be evaluated and assessed in regards to my educational strengths and weaknesses. Further, this evaluation will reveal any learning disabilities that I may suffer from. I was removed from N.P. Moss Middle School during the 1980s when I was in the sixth grade and placed in a local juvenile detention home. I look forward to preparing for and taking the GED. Once I receive this evaluation, I will better understand my educational standing, and I will better be able to determine what it is that I should work to improve and also what areas I exhibit some level of strength in.

In order to afford to receive this evaluation, I need your assistance. The cost of the entire process is $925. Once the amount has been accumulated, then I can proceed with my testing. I understand if there are those who are reluctant to donate because they might not be convinced that the funds will go towards the cause. However, I can only give my word that it is so and say that I am open to any other suggestions or ways that the money can be accumulated while maintaining the trust of the donator. You can also get more information about the facility where I hope to have the testing done by visiting the following website:

Your time and consideration is greatly appreciated.

Due to the limited space, here is the abbreviated letter that I sent instead:

Dear Readers:

I come to you as a native and life-long resident of Lafayette seeking your understanding and assistance.

Unlike many who possess keys to success in this society, I have little access to basic necessities that allow opportunities for advancement. Due to a harsh upbringing and life in and out of incarceration, I now lack education and struggle to find employment because of a felonious record. I do take full responsibility for any actions that placed me in unfavorable situations during my former lifestyle. I wish not to make excuses but simply aim to improve my life and the lives of my children.

I am seeking the assistance of an educational consultant so that I can be evaluated on my strengths and weaknesses and become aware of any learning disabilities. I was removed from N.P. Moss Middle School during the 1980s when I was in the sixth grade and placed in a local juvenile detention home. I hope to rectify a lack of a high school dimploma by obtaining a GED.
Please contact me with any information and resources that can be of help. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank You.

The letter was submitted on Monday, April 19, 2010, and I'm not sure when it will run, but I just had to send it in order to begin the process of my rehabilitation.
Now, I want to make it known that my primary reason for using that particular educational evaluation company is because that's the only one I've found locally. I have done research on this and have found that this is the only company who provides this service here in Lafayette. So, if anyone has information to the contrary, please let me know. If there is a free testing center or one that is less expensive that I am not aware of, please let it be known. I am open to all suggestions in regards to this matter.
I look forward to connecting with my readers and moving forward with this journey.
*Note: assistance was received with the organization and typing of this post.
